What is Vertebral Subluxation Complex?

Life Chiropractic CentreMany everyday things can cause our spinal bones or vertebrae to lose their normal motion or position. This sets off a chain reaction affecting the spinal bones, nerves, muscles and soft tissues. The end result can be degenerative changes throughout the body. Doctors of chiropractic refer to this as the Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC). Subluxations can cause local pain and may interfere with or impede the function of the nervous system, joints and muscles. This may decrease the body's ability to heal and function optimally.

Not only does this condition describe how the spine can affect our overall health and cause associated symptoms such as back and neck pain, but it also explains why it takes time to restore optimum health.

Must not forget that the brain stem and spinal cord are the primary pathways for nerve impulses to and from the brain. Messages back and forth through these nerves control the health and function of virtually every other cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. The VSC is comprised of five components that occur simultaneously and will explain why we feel the associated symptoms.

VSC’s 5 Components:

Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones (Spinal Kinesiopathology)

Life Chiropractic CentreThis component basically refers to. These bones are designed to move, while at the same time protecting the spinal cord and nerve roots. This is when the bone becomes restricted or stuck and thus not moving enough, or moves too much. This can be the result of physical injury (slip or fall, car or motorbike accident, repative motion injury), emotional stress (worry, anger, fear), or chemical Imbalances (alcohol, drugs, toxins, pollution). When one joint is restricted it forces other joints to move too much. These problems can distort normal spinal curves and compromise proper function. Problems in one area of the spine can cause compensation reactions in other areas.

A chiropractor detects this component through postural analysis, range of motion and diagnostic x-rays. Like dragon boat oarsman moving in a co-coordinated formation, each bone must move properly.

Abnormal nervous system function (Neuropathophysiology)

Life Chiropractic CentreAbnormal spinal function can rub, pinch, stretch, irritate, or choke the delicate tissue of the spinal cord and nerve roots. Why commonly associated with spinal problems, the pinched nerve, called a compression lesion, is actually quite rare. Research has shown that only 10-15% of spinal related problems are caused by direct pressure of the bone on nerve tissue. More frequently, nerves are irritated, referred to as a facilitative lesion, due to improperly functioning spinal structures. This is caused by nerves being stretched, twisted or irritated malfunction and improper curves.

Like the Penang Bridge, on accident can bring the traffic flow to a stand still the same way nerves can be choked or compressed.

Abnormal muscle function (Myopathology)

When muscle function is impaired from too much or too little nerve supply, muscles that support the spine respond in different ways.

If the nerve impulse is reduced, muscles supporting the spine can weaken, shrink or waste away. If the muscles are over stimulated from nerve irritation supporting muscles become tight and go into spasm. Long term or extreme changes will result in fibrosis scar tissue in the muscle changing the elasticity.

Abnormal soft tissue function (Histopathology)

Life Chiropractic CentreWhen there is spinal joint malfunction, the discs, ligaments and other connective tissues are affected too. The discs can tear, bulge, herniated and degenerate. Ligaments and other connective tissue in the area can become inflamed and swollen. The accumulation of blood and lymph can bring about a rise in temperature. Discs have a poor blood supply making the healing process rather slow, this is why continuous care is required after the pain has subsided.

Abnormal function of the spine and body (Pathophysiology)

At this stage, irreversible disease or pathology can occur. This may manifest in the spinal area as bony spurs on the vertebrae, decreased disk height and roughened joint surfaces. Known as osteoarthritis or subluxation degeneration, it can occur at any age, but is increasingly common as people get older. In addition, it can lead to disease or pathology away from the spine, in all body tissues, organs and systems.

A good example is that older patient that suffers from debilitating back pain that keeps them bed ridden and multiple health problems will soon follow.
